Vismarkt (Fish Market)
Fresh North Sea fish used to be a delicacy for the rich, and was originally sold on Market Square. However, in the 18th century, fishmongers were banished from this square because of ... the unpleasant smell. Fish was initially sold in the open air. In 1820, city architect Jean-Robert Calloigne designed a Classical colonnade that is now considered the oldest preserved fish market in Belgium. You can still buy day-fresh seafood at the Fish Market from Wednesday to Saturday morning inclusive.
