Willy De Sauter. Collection presentation & recent work
The Groeningemuseum has a collection of six works by the artist Willy De Sauter. They were made between 1977 and 1994. His art was initially classified as minimalistic, fundamental and conceptual, as a result of his persistent determination to develop lines or purify simple forms. Yet sensitivity towards his materials is at least as crucial for De Sauter. In his oeuvre, the carrying medium is important in its own right, as is its position against the wall and/or in the space. The surface of the work displays the materials in the most sublime way, ranging from various types of metals and plastics to paint and putty in its basic composition: chalk, pigment and animal glue. He uses these elements to reach out to the art of the past.
The artist designed this presentation himself, uniting the museum's collection with pieces of his more recent work.
