Mirna Hidalgo Best addresses
In the late Middle Ages, Bruges was a cosmopolitan city and a melting pot of goods and nationalities. Today too, Bruges keeps with the times and is still commercially and culturally prominent. Many foreigners feel at home here and have since become real Bruges experts. Their knowledge also includes the local range of good, established shops and trendy, young businesses. We would like to share some of their favourite addresses with you.
Mirna Hidalgo is born and raised in Argentina, but led by love to Bruges. Here are her best addresses:
Absolute Art Gallery
To keep my finger on the pulse of what is happening on the international art scene, I frequently call in at the Absolute Art Gallery. You are always guaranteed a warm welcome and can learn more about the recent work of leading international artists. In particular, I am always charmed by the restful landscapes of Benoît Trimborn.

Pinsart always seem to have new and interesting contemporary exhibitions. As a result, it’s well worth popping in on a regular basis. I enjoy just wandering around this beautifully converted 18th century building, admiring all its wonderful works of art.

This is my art shop, conveniently located just a stone’s throw from the Academy. A paradise for anyone who is creative, but also a great place to find original presents that will please even the less creative souls among your acquaintances.
Katelijnestraat 49, tel. +32 (0)50 33 44 24, www.de-schacht.be
For lovers of prints and engravings, there is only one place in Bruges to go: Geert and Martine’s shop, in the shadow of the St. Saviour’s Cathedral. It is also the best address in town for all your framing, cleaning and restoration requirements. What’s more, it still possesses the authentic charm of the old print cabinets of yesteryear. Wonderful.
Sint-Salvatorskerkhof 8, tel. +32 (0)50 33 18 04, www.pollentier-marechal.be
I am certainly no expert, but I am always moved to silence whenever I pass Jean Moust’s gallery, with its dozens of Dutch and Flemish paintings from the 17th century. The blood-red walls are filled with a truly impressive collection of masterpieces. You hardly know where to look first. An overwhelming experience!
