Annual sea dedication in Zeebrugge
Free Heritage and history Parades and processions

The annual sea dedication in Zeebrugge is considered one of the most beautiful sea dedications and is well worth a trip to the coast. The procession first went out in 1926. On Sunday 23 June 2024, the procession starts at the Roezemoesschool in the Zustersstraat and then travels through the streets of Zeebrugge towards the Visserskruis (Fishermen's Cross), where an open-air worship service takes place at 11.00 a.m., graced by a brass band and ending with the blessing of the sea. This year's theme is "give and take". In rainy weather, the service will continue in St Donaas church. The procession has kept its own character for decades with an impressive group of local extras. At the centre are the children, dressed as "fishermen and fisherwomen", carrying crosses bearing the names of deceased fishermen. There are also several spoken scenes such as the biblical miraculous catch of fish and an excerpt from Herman Heijermans' "Op hoop van zegen". Since 2014, renewal of this procession was started and more vernacular elements were added. Set against the future-oriented ribbon dance of children is a subdued dance of death. A tableau vivant with a fishing family and a net-boater rattles through the streets on a farm cart pulled by a horse and there is an old-fashioned fishmonger with her fish cart. A stately church bailiff or 'Suisse' with halberd maintains serenity during the procession and worship.  In 2016, the figure of parish saint St Donaas, accompanied by a group of angels, was added. In 2018, another new scene was added: a beautiful carriage pulled by two horses. In the carriage are the bride, a shipowner's daughter, her groom and a flower girl, all decked out in belle-epoque style. Fishermen's wives sell a unique tile every year to commemorate this beautiful day of the sea dedication.
