600 jaar Anselm Adornes
Heritage and history Festival

The occasion: 600 years. That's impressive. Remembering and celebrating an event that happened six hundred years ago is not an everyday event, especially on a family scale. Six hundred years is an eternity, a kind of immortality.  The kind of immortality that many people secretly dream of and that you acquire when you do something remarkable that is remembered long enough. That is probably what Anselm was striving for, and he achieved it. In any case, this common ancestor of the entire Belgian branch of the de Limburg Stirum family has left us a precious legacy: a fantastic source of inspiration.

Anselm Adornes was born 600 years ago in Bruges, on 8 December 1424 to be precise. When he died in 1483, he had left behind an amazing Jerusalem Chapel, a mansion, houses of worship and the foundations of what would become and ever-valuable collection of works of art. This character, who certainly had great ambitions, left behind a record of a busy, adventurous, intellectual and religious life that continues to inspire his descendants. Anselm Adornes received a good education and could read and write, which was not common at the time. He was a knight, a major player in the alum stone trade (a mineral essential for dyeing wool), a diplomat for the dukes of Burgundy and a pilgrim in Jerusalem. His personality and skills made him an unrivalled negotiator and lover of all forms of art - in short, a Renaissance man 'avant la lettre'.

His many journeys to sometimes hostile countries, proof of fitness and courage, contributed greatly to his prestige. It goes without saying, therefore, that his descendants and those responsible for family history want to pay tribute to a man whose legacy continues to fascinate. "We believe it is our role and our moral responsibility to share and disseminate knowledge about this heritage, so important to the identity of Bruges and the Burgundian states. This knowledge will enrich or just give pleasure to everyone. Our aim is not to flatter family glory but rather to share, in our humble way, the lessons of a critical view of history. Current world events show the damage that the lack of such a critical view and the instrumentalisation of history can do. We have tried to do this in different ways: through an exhibition, a book and conferences." (Véronique de Limburg Stirum)
