The poppies of Flanders Fields
During this excursion to the Westhoek, a guide (explanations are provided in French and English) will tell you about the events that led to WWI and how this tragedy unfolded. Your day will be filled with locations that recall four years of war. You will start with a WWI German cemetery and trenches, followed by The Brooding Soldier monument. This commemorates 2,000 Canadian victims of the initial German gas attack. Then, the excursion will continue to Hill 60 and Ypres. After lunch, your afternoon will begin with a visit to the poignant In Flanders Fields Museum. The impressive Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passendale is the next stop. Tyne Cot is the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world where British, Irish, Australian and Canadian soldiers have their final resting place. The bus will also take you to Essex Farm, where Dr. John McCrae wrote the famous poem 'In Flanders Fields'. After a quick bite to eat in Ypres, you will conclude at the Menin Gate with the Last Post ceremony. A daily tribute that keeps alive the sacrifice of many men and women during WWI.
