Tolhuis (Toll House)
In the Middle Ages a toll was levied at St. John’s bridge, now Jan van Eyck Square. Pieter van Luxemburg, a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, used this money to rebuild the Old Tollhouse in 1477. The late Gothic porch is therefore decorated with his polychrome coat of arms. On the left you will notice the little stone façade of the guild house of the stevedores. Four porch statuettes illustrate the trade.
