Passantenfietsbrug (Cycle bridge)
The contemporary and the historic are constantly combined in Bruges. The elegant Passantenfietsbrug is one of the more recent examples, but it owes its name to the city’s rich history. Medieval Bruges drew people from far and wide, some of them passing through (‘passanten’ in Dutch) while on their way elsewhere. The counting post records the number of today’s cyclists who are ‘passing by’, and showing how many cycles (‘fietsen’ in Dutch) have sped over the bridge every day and throughout the year.
