Nadia Naveau (BE) - Les Niches Parties
Placed inside several alcoves along the waters of the Augustijnrei, Nadia Naveau has installed a series of colourfully-decorated and gleaming masks, thereby brightening up a hidden part of Bruges' canals. The installation 'Les Niches Parties' echoes the festive atmosphere Naveau experienced during a trip to Mexico, where coloured flags and textile garlands would bring the streets to life. It also refers to flags' communicative function as a means of identification or warning, conveying a message or ideology.
In Bruges, she is giving these alcoves a temporary playful appearance with a masquerade serving to inspire the imagination, a warm welcome for any passer-by.
In her figurative sculptures, Nadia Naveau (°1975, Bruges, living and working in Antwerp and Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais) combines the aesthetics of classical antiquity or European baroque with those of The Simpsons, expressions of Mexican culture or pop culture. This often results in seductive and surprising sculptures, based on an interaction of shapes, colours, scale and all kinds of materials.
